Spangler, 88, San Diego, Calif. died Nov. 5, 2000. The son of Joseph O. and Ivy Spangler, he was born in Stoystown. He moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1957 and lived there until he relocated to San Diego, Calif. in 1997. Mr. Spangler is survived by two children, Sylvia Leichter and Glenn Spangler, both California; a sister, Verna of Somerset, and a brother, Neil, Frederick, Md. Also five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 53 years, Clara, preceded him in death in 1993. A 1933 graduate of Juniata College. Mr. Spangler served with Naval Intelligence in World War II, achieving the rank of Lt. Cdr. He was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his efforts to obtain information from German prisoners regarding the location of sunken mines in the harbor of Marseilles, France. A life-long writer, many of his articles were published. He served as historian at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. where he became friends with Apache Indian chiefs and their families living there. Mr. Spangler taught in the Arizona Junior College system for many years. He also taught at Arizona State University where he earned his PhD in Linguistics.
