Born Aug. 23, 1918 in Meyersdale, a son of the late James and Mary (Buskey) Spence. Survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Hattie Elizabeth "Betty" Spence; a son, James E. and his wife, Kathy (Fay) Spence, Bridgeville; a granddaughter, Andrea Fay Spence, Johnson City, Tenn.; a brother, Robert Spence, Meyersdale; a sister, Leona (Spence) Siehl, Meyersdale; a niece, Shirley Siehl, Meyersdale; two nephews, James Benson, Mechanicsburg and Robert Pritchard, Cumberland, Md. Also a special sister-in -law, Shirley Bender, Grantsville, Md. Mr. Spence was a member of the Amity United Church of Christ, Meyersdale. Graduate of Meyersdale High School, Class of 1936. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II and he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from PPG Industries in Cumberland, Md. A member of the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for 30 years. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, with Rev. Bruce Ashlock officiating. Interment, Union Cemetery, Meyersdale. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department, Meyersdale, Pa., 15552. Daily American, November 2, 2002 [S2606]
