Spurgeon, 93, of Confluence died July 31, 1995, at Patriot Manor, Somerset. Born Jan. 17, 1902, in Somerfield, daughter of Judson C. and Mary Alice (Frazee) Spurgeon. Preceded in death by parents, five brothers and five sisters. Survived by nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Confluence United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, choir member for many years as well as a Sunday School teacher and Program Director. She taught school for 48 years in Fayette and Somerset counties. Attended California University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne universities. She introduced art as a subject in the Turkeyfoot School District. It was placed on the curriculum and offered as a course in both the elementary and high schools. She wrote the Centennial history of Confluence Borough and contributed an article which was published during the country's Bicentennial in a book entitled "So Your Children Can Tell Their Children." Also contributed material for publication of the book, "Youghiogheny, Appalachia, and Somerfield," by Tim Palmer. Served as vice regent of the Great Crossings Chapter of the DAR in Addison. She donated a quilt made by her during the Bicentennial of our nation. This quilt hangs on display in Bayhes Hall in the Constitutional Building in Washington, D.C. A charter member of PSEA as well as county, state, and national education associations. Also active in many civic organizations. Friends will be received from 2 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. John Snyder officiating.
