Born Dec. 21, 1907 in Humbert, daughter of Raleigh and Elizabeth (Colborn) Stairs. Preceded in death by parents and brother Jim Stairs. Survived by her husband Merle, stepson Edward, Boston, Mass. and step granddaughters: Cynthia Stahl, Stamford, Conn. and Heather Stecher, Aiken, S.C. Sister of Mary Lou Groff, Glen Arms, Md, and John Stairs, Keystone Heights, Fla. Received her teacher training at Juniata College and the University of Connecticut. Graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Taught school in Somerset County, and Mt. Lebanon and Chartiers Valley Schools in Allegheny County. Received her social work training from Tulane University. Worked as a visitor for the Pa. Dept. of Public Assistance. During World War II she worked as a psychiatric aid at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Conn., and later as assistant to the director. Worked for the Dept. of Public Assistance as a supervisor out of Harrisburg, before becoming county director in Fulton and Tioga Counties. Former supervisor in Dept. of Public Assistance Medical Division, Johnstown. Member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Stoystown; Retired Teachers Association, and Stoystown Area Historical Society. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown where service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Rev. Paul E. Claycomb officiating.
