Stahl, 78, Martinsburg, formerly of Altoona and Somerset County, died Thursday Dec. 25, 1997, at the Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, Blair Co., following a brief illness. Born May 2, 1919, in Sipesville, son of the late George Russell and Bertha Mae (Shaffer) Stahl. Preceded in death by parents, four brothers and two sisters. Survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Dorothy K. Bland, one daughter, Cheryl S. Felton, Dayton, Ohio; one son, Barry G., Dayton, Minn.; five grandchildren and one brother, Charles B. Stahl, Tampa, Fla. He was a member of the St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Martinsburg and retired as pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altoona in June of 1984. Previously served pastorates in Waynesboro from 1955-73; Taneytown, Md. from 1945-55; and Hooversville from 1943-45. Following his retirement, he served as interium [sic] pastor at several Lutheran churches. He was a 1936 graduate of Somerset High School, 1940 graduate of Gettysburg College and a 1943 graduate of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary. He formerly served on the executive board of the Maryland and Central Pa. Synods. Family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg; and from 10-11 a.m. Monday, the time of service, at the St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, with Bishop Gregory R. Pile and Pastor Timothy H. Knauss officiating. Interment, Alto-Reste Park, Altoona. Family suggests memorial contributions be given to the St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the First Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund.
