"Paul" 06/29/05 Daily American Byron P. "Paul" Stairs, 87, Somerset, passed on June 28, 2005, at home. Born Aug. 16, 1917, in Westmoreland County, he is the son of the late Byron L. and Bertha (Brown) Stairs. He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Franklin Stairs and sister, Cora "Ethel" Flick. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Madeline (Buratty) Stairs; children, Donald P. Stairs, Somerset, Kenneth, married to Nanasue (Peck) Stairs, Rockwood, and Nancy, married to Patrick Pickard, Somerset; grandchildren: Adam, Stacy and Heather Stairs and Erin and Christopher Pickard; sister, Edith Domanyi, Berlin, Helen Barnett, Somerset, and Olive Barber, Texas, and brothers, Carl Stairs, Meyersdale, and Clark Stairs, Dayton. He worked in the timber industry as a sawyer for his entire adult life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II serving in the Philippines and loved motorcycles, horses and woodworking. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Bakersville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mount Zion Church. The Rev. George Mason officiating. Interment with full military honors by the Somerset County Honor Guard at Bakersville Cemetery.
