Meyersdale Republican, July 1, 1943 ----- EDGAR STANTON Sudden Death of Edgar Stanton Was Shock and Loss to the Entire Community Grantsville, Md. - The sudden and untimely death of Edgar V. Stanton in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, at 5:40 Wednesday morning, June 30, was a shock and loss to this entire community. His death was due to a type of sleeping sickness, very unusual in this country. He had been suffering for a week from what seemed to be a cold, but he was able to continue his work until Sunday, when his ailment evolved into a critical state. He was taken to the hospital Monday morning, but his malady baffled the skill of the medical staff and he passed away the second morning after his hospitalization. A son of Mrs. Rebecca Van Sickel Stanton, and the late W. E. Stanton, he attended the Grantsville High School, graduated from Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Va., class of 1924, and completed two years at Franklin and Marshall Academy, Lancaster, Pa. He was a life-long member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, a charter member of the Grantsville Rotary Club, and a member of Grantsville Camp, W.O.W. His passing removed a quiet and unassuming personality and one of the most likeable and charitable men from the local scene. Mr. Stanton's great-grandfather, William Stanton, founded "Stanton's Mill" at Little Crossings. Later his grandfather, Eli Stanton, took over its management. In 1909 his father, William Edward Stanton, assumed the entire ownership. In 1927, Edgar V. Stanton began assisting his father, and since his father's death, a year and a half ago, entered the business in partnership with his sister, Mrs. Byron H. Bender. On April 8, 1938, Mr. Stanton married Miss Virginia Johnson, of near Grantsville, a great-granddaughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Johnson, first governor of the State of Maryland. Surviving besides his wife are his mother, Mrs. Rebecca V. Stanton, and three sisters, Mrs. Byron H. Bender, Mrs. Lena Stanton Bender, both of Grantsville, and Mrs. J. Stanton Funk, of Washington, Pa. Rev. Alvin J. Forry, pastor of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Grantsville, assisted by Rev. V. R. Gillum, pastor of the Grantsville Methodist Church, conducted the funeral rites Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The services were held in the home at Little Crossings, which was filled with many sorrowing relatives and friends and many floral tributes, evidencing the esteem in which he was held. The hymns, "Rock of Ages", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and "Sometime We'll Understand", were sung by the trio, Mrs. Harry J. Bender, Mrs. Harry Yommer, and Mrs. Alvin J. Yoder. The Grantsville Rotary Club attended the services in a body. Business places of Grantsville closed at 3 o'clock and remained closed for the afternoon. Serving as pallbearers were: Harry Yommer, Stuart Stahl, Joe Fahey, Frank Getty, Scott Holliday and C. O. Bender. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery.
