Stanton Operated Stanton's Mill at Little Crossings, Founded by Grandfather The entire Grantsville community was deeply saddened Monday morning to learn of the sudden death of one of its best known and most popular citizens, William Edgar Stanton. Mr. Stanton died of a heart attack about 4:20 o'clock Monday morning, Jan. 19. He became ill shortly after 3 o'clock and passed away a few moments before the arrival of the physician who was summoned. His sudden death came as a distinct shock to his family and hosts of friends. Mr. Stanton had suffered with a heart ailment for about seven years. His condition seemed much improved in recent years however, until a short time ago when another attack occurred and his physician prescribed a rest. Even so, his condition was not considered alarming. He apparently recovered sufficiently to be able to be out again and had attended church on Sunday morning. He chatted with friends and called upon a neighbor, seemingly feeling exceptionally well. The attack early Monday morning did not seem as severe as previous ones, but proved fatal nevertheless. The task of writing a fitting obituary for this highly esteemed gentleman is a difficult one as mere words do not seem sufficient to express his splendid character and his outstanding place in the community. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and his friends could be numbered by his acquaintances. Mr. Stanton was widely known throughout this and neighboring counties. His grandfather founded "Stanton's Mill" at Little Crossings. His father, Eli Stanton, succeeded him in this business and following his graduation from the Paughkeepsie Business College, at Paughkeepsie, N.Y., W. E. Stanton entered the concern in partnership with his father. Later, he took over the entire ownership and has successfully conducted the business since 1909. During the last few years he has been assisted by his son, Edgar V. Stanton, and son-in- law, Byron H. Bender. For a number of years Mr. Stanton also served on the Board of Directors of the former First National Bank of Grantsville, and for six years held the office of vice-president. Besides his interest in the affairs of the community, he also took an active part in the work of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, of which he was a life-long member. He had been an officer of this organization for years, first as Deacon and later as Elder, in which capacity he had served for about twenty years. Until the time of his death he took an active interest in the work of the Consistory Board of his church, of which he was a member of long standing. He was extremely generous and always willing to lend his cooperation and contribute to any cause he felt was just and worthy. When a recent Sunday school room was added to the church, Mr. Stanton was one of the most substantial contributors. He was equally generous toward other affairs. Possibly his last contribution to any cause was a sizable donation made a few days ago, to the present Red Cross campaign. The congregation to which he belonged, as well as the entire community, owes much to this man for his ardent support and his loss will be felt keenly, not only by his bereaved family, but by his hosts of friends throughout this entire section. "Ed" Stanton, as he was popularly and affectionately known, was born at Grantsville, Md., September 28, 1870. He was 71 years of age at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Eli and Harriett Broadwater Stanton, and was the third of five children. His entire life was spent in the Grantsville community and he was numbered among its most substantial citizens. In September, 1897 he married Miss Rebecca Van Sickel, of Somerfield, Pa., and they have since resided at the present home at Little Crossings, just east of here. To this union five children were born. A daughter, Lillian, died at the age of three months. The others, with their mother, survive. They are, Mrs. Byron H. Bender, Mrs. Lena S. Bender and Edgar V. Stanton, Grantsville, and Mrs. Stanton Funk, Washington, Pa. Also surviving are a brother, J. Urban Stanton, Grantsville, and a sister, Mrs. Harvey H. Maust, Salisbury, and four grandchildren, Robert and Joan Bender, Grantsville, Edgar Bender and Helen Louise Funk, Washington, Pa. Funeral services are to be conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Alvin J. Forry, pastor of the local Reformed Church, and Rev. L. N. Wilson, Berlin, Pa.
