Mr. Statler had not been in good health for a number of years and for the past several months, his condition had been becoming steadily worse, but he was bedfast for only a few days so that his death was rather sudden. Mr. Statler was a coal miner in his youth, but eventually became associated with his father and brothers in the coal business as an operator, and at the time of his retirement, was associated with his older brother in the Pleasant Hill Coal Co. A few years ago, he, with his brothers, did some work around a mine near Casselman, Pa., but for the most part his interest was in his gardening. He was born in Salisbury on March 29, 1880, a son of Emanuel and Susan (Hartline) Statler and was aged 64 years, 10 months and 3 days at his death. He is survived by his wife, Besse (Stotler) Statler; two daughters, Alberta, wife of Harry Scott, Baltimore, and Marian, wife of Pvt. Fred H. Petry, Salisbury; and one son, Edgar D., of Cumberland. In addition he is survived by three brothers, M. Franklin and Herbert H., Salisbury, and Cluell E., of Johnstown; one sister, Nellie, wife of Robert H. Deist, Bedford, and two grandchildren, Sandra Sue and Diane Petry. Funeral services were conducted at his home on Sunday, February 4, at 2:30 p.m., by his pastor, Rev. Ira S. Monn of the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Mortician Stanley M. Thomas in charge of arrangements. Meyersdale Republican, February 8, 1945
