"Shorty" Steckman Sr., 85, Somerset, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on April 22, 2006. Born Feb. 25, 1921, in Madera, a son of James and Louella (Layton) Steckman. Preceded by parents; his wife, the former Montreda Flick; and three brothers, Howard, James and John. Survived by his children, Dennis, Somerset; Tom, Boswell; and Kayleen, Stoystown; grandchildren, Brian, D.J., Jennifer, Montreda and Lucinda; great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Madison, Cameron and Jason. Also survived by his sisters, Margaret Kovack, Michigan; Diana Engle, Texas; Laverne Weyandt, Shanksville; Mary Metzger, Stoystown; Edyth Kimmel, Somerset; and a special friend and neighbor, Janet Yanoi. Elmer was a member of the UMWA and Laurel Mountain Grace Brethren Church. He retired as the supervisor and foreman for Reitz Coal Co. after 48 years of work. He is a USAF veteran of World War II where served as a military policeman. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend too many. He enjoyed his flowers, fishing, hunting and his music. He played guitar and piano as long as he was able. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Deaner Funeral Home, Hooversville, where a service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Patricia Nelson officiating.
