Steckman, 83, of Stoystown RD 3, died Dec. 28, 1980, in Somerset Community Hospital. Born June 18, 1897, in Madera, son of John and Mary (Gatehouse) Steckman. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, the former Luella Layton; son, James Jr.; a granddaughter and two sisters. Survived by these children: Howard W., and Mrs. Dean (Mary) Metzgar, both of Stoystown RD 3; John H. of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. George (Margaret) Kovack of Detroit, Mich.; Elmer T., and Mrs. Jack (LaVerne) Weyandt, both of Shanksville; Mrs. George (Diana) Engle of Austin, Texas; and Mrs. James (Edyth) Kimmel of Somerset; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Brother of Mrs. John (Diana) Flick of Somerset. Member of Reading Grace Brethren Church; retired coal miner and member UMWA Local 998 Tire Hill. Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Larry R. Weigle officiating.
