Oscar Steckman, Sr., 86, of Smithton, Pa., a former resident of Meyersdale RD 1, died Sept. 28 in Mt. View Rest Center. Mr. Steckman was born January 26, 1886, in Connellsville. He was united in marriage with his first wife, Annie Goehringer, at St. Paul's Wilhelm Reformed Church, now the Amity-Wilhelm United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, two daughters and three sisters. He is survived by three children of his first marriage, Roy Steckman, Jerome; Mrs. Edna Rhodes, Adelphi, Md., and Oscar Jr., of Potomac, Md. He is survived by his second wife, Opal, and two children: Nancy, wife of Dr. Conrad Bures, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Paul, Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Walter (Cora) Baer of Jerome, formerly of Meyersdale RD. Mr. Steckman was an employee of a Somerset County mining firm. He was also superintendent of two mines of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. prior to his retirement. He was a member of Blyth Lodge, F and AM, West Newton, Pa.; Odd Fellows of Smithton; the Somerset County Historical Soc. and Hope Memorial Lutheran Church, Smithton. Funeral service was conducted Oct. 1 at Barthels Funeral Home in Smithton, with his pastor, the Rev. Albert Speck, officiating. Interment was in Olive Branch Cemetery.
