Heckle recently received word of the death of his sister, Mrs. David C. Steel, who passed away Thursday, March 23, 1944, in a hospital at Seattle, Washington. Mrs. Sophie E. Steel was aged 85 years, the daughter of Christian O. and Catherine (Whipkey) Heckle, and was born at Edie, Somerset County, Pa. Many years ago she went west and was located in Illinois for several years, before going to Kirkland, Wash., in 1904. In 1939 she located in Seattle, residing at 2808 Second Avenue until her death. Mrs. Steel was twice married, the firt time to Samuel Grove. Two sons born to this union - William C. Grove, Bellevue, Wash., and Arthur C. Grove, Kirkland, Wash., survive. Seven years following the death of her first husband she married David C. Steel, who survives. Mrs. Grove had four sons in World War I, and now has two grandsons in the armed forces, with another one about old enough to join the army. An only brother, C. C. Heckle, Meyersdale R.D., and two half-brothers, Rev. C. R. Ferner and Winfield Ferner, also survive. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 24, in Kirkland, Wash. Rev. Frank Blish of the Kirkland Community Church, officiated. Burial was made in the Kirkland Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, April 20, 1944
