Stein, 75, prominent Somerset businessman, died at his home, 158 East Union St., Somerset, Monday Oct. 7, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been in ill health since Labor Day. Mr. Stein was born at Speelman's Mills, Allegany County, Md., on Jan. 27, 1871, a son of John and Anna (Tremper) Stein, both deceased. His parents, natives of Germany, were honored residents of Meyersdale for many years. As a youth Mr. Stein resided in Ursina, Rockwood and Meyersdale before locating in Somerset. In the early 1900's he became associated in the hotel business in Fairmont, W.Va. In 1909 he built the historic old Quemahoning Hotel at Jenners No. 2 mine in Jenner Twp. and operated it for many years. Later, he assisted his sister, Mrs. Nora Mitchell, in managing the Vannear Hotel in Somerset. Among his real estate holdings at the time of his death was the Stein Block, Graham Ave., Windber, housing the McCrory and American Stores and the Bricker Clothing Store. He purchased the Schell Building, in Somerset, in 1944 from P. A. Schell. Mr. Stein was the oldest living member of Somerset Lodge No. 358, F. & A. M. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma (Walter) Stein, a daughter, Mrs. James R. Cameron, Philadelphia, and a son, John W. Stein, at home. There are two grandsons, James R. Cameron Jr. and George Stein Cameron, both of Philadelphia. He was the brother of Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. John Ryan, both of Somerset; Mrs. Elizabeth Speicher, Jennerstown; Mrs. John Adamson, Meyersdale; Mrs. John Hewes, Baltimore, Md.; and Mrs. Sarah Hattan, Erwin, Tenn. A brother, Albert, preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted in his late residence on East Union Street, Somerset, Thursday afternoon at 3:30, with Rev. Dr. I. Hess Wagner, his pastor, officiating. Interment, under direction of Mortician Walter S. Hoffman in the Husband Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, October 11, 1946
