  STERN
  
  Charles W. (Jim) Stern, 70, of Gray, died Nov. 1, 1988, at Somerset
  Community Hospital.  Born July 27, 1918, in Lincoln Township, son of
  Robert I. and Catherine (Howard) Stern.  Preceded in death by
  parents, two brothers and two sisters.  Survived by his wife of 48
  years, the former Mary Speicher; and these children: Larry, married
  to former Barbara Greer, of Albany, Ga.; Charles D. and Carol Ann
  Layton, both of Somerset; grandchildren, Janet and Lisa Stern. 
  Brother of Harry and Laura Shaw, both of Canastota, N.Y.  Retired in
  1980 after 33 years at Somerset Foundry and Machine Co.  World War II
  Army veteran, with service in the South Pacific.  Family will receive
  friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Deaner
  Funeral Home, Stoystown, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday
  with Rev. Max DeArmey.  Interment, Beulah Cemetery.
