Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Somerset Township, son of the late Joseph F. and Stella (Friedline) Stern. Also preceded in death by grandson, James Stern; great-granddaughter, Cassandra Haupt; sisters, Melda Phillippi; Bessie and Ruth Stern; brothers, Edmond and Jacob. Survived by wife, the former Violet P. Miller; children: Audrey Stern Hershey of West Grove, and James K. of Somerset RD 2; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Brother of Mrs. Charlie (Nancy) Briar, Somerset RD 6; Harry, Somerset; Mrs. Gilbert (Evelyn) Berkey, Somerset RD 6; Paul of Somerset. Son-in-law of Alice Ewel Miller, Somerset RD 6, and the late Bert Miller. Death ends marriage of 51 years. Retired carpenter. Member of Samuels Lutheran Church; National Rifle Association; I.O.O.F. Lodge 438; United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of American #4149; National Federation of Sportsmen; Lavansville, Bakersville and Trent Rod and Gun Club and the Laurel Ridge Sportsmen Association. Friends received from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Samuels Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Steiner officiating.
