John Stiteler Jr., 76, and his wife, Marion Simpson Stiteler, 72, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the William Wood Funeral Home in Rockwood, the Rev. Gene Abel officiating. Col. and Mrs. Stiteler were killed in an accident near Zacatacas, Mexico, Friday morning while en route to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, when their automobile collided with a train. Born July 11, 1896 in Media, Col. Stiteler was a son of W. J. Stiteler and Martha Critchfield Stiteler. He is survived by a brother, Elmer C. Stiteler of Albuquerque, N. Mexico. Born August 17, 1900 in Somerset, Mrs. Stiteler was the daughter of Edward Simpson and Cathryn Barron Simpson. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Albert Reynolds of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Guy Heaps of Lancaster and Mrs. Ralph Rustin of Westfield, N.J. They are both survived by two children, Atty. Edward S. Stiteler of Greensburg and Mrs. Jacqueline Des Cognets of Williamstown, Mass., and eight grandchildren. Mrs. Stiteler was a native of Somerset and she and Col. Stiteler had lived in Somerset County at Middle Creek Farm for over 30 years. Col. Stiteler formed the original Coal Operators Casualty Co. in Greensburg and was president of the Westmoreland Casualty Co., Greensburg. He also was a member of the advisory board of directors, Mellon Bank and Trust Co., Barclay Office; past president, Somerset County Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; past commander, Harrisburg American Legion Post; past director, Meyersdale Community Hospital; past director, Somerset County Borough Association; member of Somerset Lodge No. 358 F. and A.M.; member of Jaffa Temple, Altoona; member Harrisburg Consistory A.A.S.R.; member Kingwood Lodge No. 1010, Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows; Somerset VFW; Somerset American Legion; Somerset Shrine Club; Sigma Chi fraternity. Col. Stiteler served in W.W.I as an infantry sergeant in France and as colonel in the U.S. Air Force in W.W.II. Mrs. Stiteler was a well known Somerset County artist and a member of the Somerset County Artists Association. Daily American, January 1, 1973 [S3055 & S3056]
