Stoner, scion of one of the pioneer families of Brothersvalley Township, died at his late home, Oak Grove Farm, early Sunday morning of a heart block. He was born Dec. 27, 1859, in the home of the late W. A. Seibert and was 86 years, 10 months and 12 days old at the time of his passing. He was the son of the late John O. and Elizabeth Kimmel Stoner. His wife preceded him in death by seven years. Surviving are his son John O. Stoner II, and these grandchildren: John O. III, Peter, Mary and Ruth. Dr. Stoner was a graduate of Chambersburg Academy, Allegheny College, Meadville, and Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. After graduation from medical college he practiced medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he married Dr. Jessie Boggs. In 1905 he retired from medical practice and came to Berlin to take over the management of the coal holdings of his father, John Oliver Stoner. He resided on Broadway for some years before he moved to his ancestral home, Oak Grove Farm, where he farmed and managed the Stoner coal industry. This farm has been in the Stoner family since 1850 and was the first farm to be cleared in Brothersvalley Township in pioneer days, Philip Wegerlem having been the original settler and owner. This farm was very productive in coal and limestone and at one time there was a weaving industry operated on the farm by some of the early occupants, for the weaving of wollen coverlets and carpets. Dr. Stoner was much interested in the history of Somerset County and spent his later years in the study of genealogy of many pioneer families. His collection of family histories is valuable to many residents of this community. Funeral services were held at the Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. D. S. Stephen, retired pastor of the Reformed Church, officiating. Interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Berlin. Meyersdale Republican, November 15, 1946
