He was one of eight children of James and Sarah (Rush) Strope. He was born Sept. 11, 1927, in Oak Forest, near Waynesburg. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, with seven brothers and sisters preceding him in death. On May 2, 1949, he married Irma H. (Kerr) who survives. He is also survived by seven children, Kenneth and wife, Gale Gary; Marilyn and husband, Bill Gerhart, and Lisa, all of Meyersdale; Susan Pettit, Washington, Pa.; Terry, and wife, Emma, Albuquerque, N.M.; and Cynthia and husband, Michael Lowery, Marianna. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. John worked in hospitals most of his life in performing maintenance. His last employer was the Meyersdale Community Hospital where he was the maintenance supervisor. He was a proud veteran as a Navy CB during World War II. In his younger years, John was frequently called upon by American Red Cross to donate blood in emergency situations. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and showing his antique car. He was especially proud of his woodworking shop and his many projects. He built the home he and his wife Irma lived in. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Randy Haulk officiating. Interment is in the Union Cemetery.
