He was born in 1927 in North Braddock, the son of the late Alvin L. and Mary B. Porter Stuart. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Jane McAndrews Stuart; two daughters, Judith Louise Shipley, Allison Park; and Nancy Jane Black, South Riding, Va.; two sons, David Alvin Stuart, Chicago; and Robert Lee Stuart, Fort Collins, Colo. He is also survived by three grandsons and four granddaughters. Alvin is a graduate of Scott High School in the class of 1945. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 9th Air Force Service Command in Germany. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, and his doctorate of philosophy degree from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He taught in the elementary schools of Pittsburgh, and served as principal of the Espe and McKnight Schools in the North Allegheny School District. He taught on the college level at Ohio University, Culver-Stockton college, Canton, Mo., and Indiana University of . Pennsylvania At IUP he served as the last director of the Keith Laboratory School and as the first director of the University School. In 1972, he joined the Department of Elementary Education and there became the director of the doctoral program. He retired from the position in 1986. He was a member of the Wildwood United Methodist Church; Wildwood Masonic Lodge 92; PHP of William S. Daughtery Royal Arch Chapter, Indiana, Pa. He was a life member of PSEA; a life member and past commander of Indiana County VFW Post 1989 and a member of Tri-City Post 18 of the American Legion, Wildwood, Fla. Cremation took place in Florida. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the chapel in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills Borough. Interment of his ashes will follow at the site of his parents' graves in the Garden of Gethsemane. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wildwood United Methodist Church, 300 Main St., Wildwood, FL 34785 and Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 237 Whipkey Dam Road, Rockwood, PA 15557.
