Stuart, 65, formerly of Somerset, died Aug. 21, 2006, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va. She had ovarian cancer. Born Oct. 13, 1940, at Somerset Community Hospital, the daughter of the late James R. and Frances D. Stuart. She grew up on her family's farm off Coxes Creek Road. Her father, Jeb was the owner of the Somerset Canning Corporation. Survivors include her two sisters, Tait Stuart Livingood, Charlottesville, Va. and Betsy Stuart North, Clarke County, Va.; four nephews, three nieces; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews. A 1958 graduate of Somerset Joint High School and a 1962 graduate of California State College in California, Pa., with a degree in elementary education. Her teaching career, which spanned 22 years, began in Davidsville, where she taught from 1962 to 1965. She moved to Fairfax County, Va., in 1965, where she taught first graders at Mt. Vernon Woods Elementary School, Alexandria, from 1965 to 1967. For the next four years she taught U.S. Department of Defense dependents at schools in Wiesbaden, Germany. During her years in Germany, she traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and China. In 1971, she returned to Mt. Vernon Woods Elementary, where she continued to teach first graders until November 1984. In 1985 she went to work at the Bureau of National Affairs, a publisher of legal and regulatory information in Washington, D.C. At BNA, Ms. Stuart was a proofreader/data entry keyer. She retired from BNA in March 2000. From 1965 to 2004, Ms Stuart lived in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, Va. She was an active member of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.) and a regular contributor to the Inova Mt. Vernon Blood Center. In 2004, she moved to Clarke County, Va., and became active in the FISH program in Berryville. She was an active member of the Berryville Presbyterian Church, where her funeral service was held Aug. 26. A nephew by marriage, the Rev. Thomas W. Simmons, officiated. Interment was in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, Va.
