Mr. Sturtz was constable of the borough of Wellersburg, in which capacity he served for a number of years and his duties were well performed. He was a good citizen, sturdy and upright, well liked, a man with many friends. He was born August 28, 1862, three days after his father enrolled at Berlin, Pa., for military duty in the Civil War as a corporal in Company F, in the 142nd Regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer infantry, under Captain Francis A. Edmonds, Colonel Robert P. Cummins, commanding the regiment. Comrade Sturtz was killed in line of battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Susan B. Sturtz, widow, died September 10, 1918, aged 72 years, 3 months and 10 days. The surviving children of Hiram and Susanna Witt Sturtz are William, Walter E., Elmer, Carl, George and Mrs. Belle Maurice, of Wellersburg, Harry E., of Chambersburg, Pa., and Robert E., of Stoyestown, R.F.D. No. 2. Three sons and three daughters died single. There are twenty-eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Souria Sturtz Weimer, of Holsopple, also survives. Mr. Sturtz was a member of the Wellersburg Evangelical Church. The funeral sermon was preached in this church by the pastor, Rev. Clewell E. Miller, of Ellerslie, Md. Interment at the Cook Cemetery in Southampton Township. The obsequies were attended by a great number of relatives and friends, all of whom most deeply feel the loss. The Sturtz, Beal and Witt families were among the early settlers of Londonderry Township, Bedford County, which has long since become Southampton Township, Somerset County. John Jacob Sturtz, progenitor of the Sturtz family here, came from Berks County, Pa., after serving in the American Revolutionary War. Meyersdale Republican, June 4, 1931
