He was born Jan.17, 1917, in Bedford County. He was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in 1937, and received two degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Ph.D. in medical physiology in 1941 and M.D. in 1943. He later served as a trustee of Franklin and Marshall. Jake served as an anesthesiologist with a Marine field surgical unit in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his return, he taught in the medical schools at Wisconsin and Boston University. Jake authored over 35 papers related to anesthesia for openheart surgery and control of hypertension. In 1950, he began a career in the pharmaceutical industry at Smith, Kline and French Laboratories. He helped to start Riker Laboratories in 1952, from which he retired as president in 1982. Surviving are his loving family: his son, Walter; daughter-in-law, Esther Friesner-Stutzman; granddaughter, Annie, of Madison, Conn.; and grandson, Michael, New York. He was preceded in death by his life-long friend, fellow fisherman and beloved wife of 58 years, Jerry, in 2005. Jake's legacy is one of healing. From his wartime service to his research and leadership in the pharmaceutical industry, his choices and actions improved people's lives. Jake's sense of humor, love of fishing and independent, forthright approach to life will be remembered by all who knew him. At Jake's request, there will be no memorial service.
