Mrs. Summy was born on a farm near Springs, October 25, 1842, the eighth child of John and Annie Hershberger Stevanus. Her mother died when she was three years old and she was reared by her stepmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Yoder Stevanus. She never traveled more than thirty miles from her home except once when she went to Oakland, Maryland. She remained single until she was some 60 years old, then married a widower, Solomon Summy, who died twenty years ago. Mrs. Summy was honor guest at a birthday party given on her 100th anniversary, last October. Except for failing sight, her health had been good until about a week prior to her death. Among her friends she had been known as "Aunt Tillie." Floriculture was her hobby and she also spent much time making rugs. Mrs. Summy became a member of the Amish-Mennonite Church early in her long life, and remained faithful to the teachings of her church until she passed to her reward. She was a noble character and had a wide acquaintance and many friends. She was one of 23 children of her father, and is survived by one half- brother, Gabriel Stevanus, residing at Hyndman; also by one half-sister, Mrs. Lydia Schrock, Farmington, Del., and by three step-sons, Yost, Benjamin and Jacob Summy, all residing near Summit Mills. Funeral was held at the Amish Mennonite Church at Niverton, Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Joseph Yoder officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Stanley M. Thomas, mortician of Salisbury. Meyersdale Republican, January 21, 1943
