Svonavec, 81, of Somerset, died April 11, 2003 at Somerset Hospital. Born Dec. 7, 1921 in Somerset Township, a son of Steve and Helen Margaret (Bator) Svonavec. Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Margaret Knapp and Dorothy "Dozy" Steinkirchner. Survived by wife, the former Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Miller to whom he was married 54 years; children: Mrs. Edward L (Jane) Hoffman of Rockwood; S. Robert Svonavec married to the former Nancy English of Somerset, Richard L. Svonavec of Somerset; Mrs. Brian (Susan) Gyorko of Somerset, Ms. Carol Stoy of Somerset, Ronald A. Svonavec married to the former Amy Shaffer of Somerset, and Mrs. Bruce A. (Joan) Suter of Somerset; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Brother of Mrs. Helen Zborovancik of Friedens, Mrs. Joseph (Jane) Van Aller-Klotz of Shanksville, Mrs. Dean (Agnes) Hay of Rockwood, Joseph J. Svonavec of Rockwood, Donald W. Svonavec of Listie, Mrs. William (Elizabeth "Betsy") Aust of Friedens, John J. "Jim" Svonavec of Somerset. Member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, World War II veteran U.S. Army, retired farmer and former co-founder and co-owner of Svonavec Coal Company Inc. and Casselman Enterprises and was an avid gardener. Friends received 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church Somerset, with the Monsignor Samuel J. Tomaselli celebrant Vigil for the deceased 3:45 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home.
