Marshall Swalp died at his home on Fairview Avenue, Confluence, on Thursday, November 20th, after an illness of about three weeks. He was aged 62 years and 6 days, having been born at Guard, Md., Nov. 14, 1868, the youngest child of the late John and Julietta Ream Swalp. He resided at his birthday place for 35 years, after which he moved to Everett, Pa., where he lived for ten years and then came to Confluence where he had since resided. He was married on Dec. 30, 1897, to Lucy VanSickle. He is survived by his wife and two children: John Swalp, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Kathryn Layton, of Confluence. Two children preceded him to the grave, both having died in infancy. He is also survived by one brother, Frank Swalp, of Guard, Md., and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Mickey, who lives near Confluence. One sister, Mrs. Richard Liston, died recently. He was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Confluence, a devoted husband and father and good citizen and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of Youghiougheny Lodge, No. 134, Knights of Pythias, of Friendsville, Md. Funeral services were held at the family home at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23rd, Rev. Geo. O. Ritter officiating. The choir composed of Mrs. Thea W. Marquart, Mrs. Thersa Constance, E. E. McDonald and A. T. Groff sang several beautiful selections. The pallbearers were Walter R. Tressler, Herbert A. Bird, J. L. Ream, Edward L. Hayman, George F. Frazee and H. L. Sellers. The services at the grave were in charge of Pleasant Valley Lodge, No. 72, Knights of Pythias of Confluence. Interment was made in the Addison Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Mr. Swalp's death was the third death in the immediate family, and in the family home, during the past year, a granddaughter, Nancy Ann Layton having died Jan. 12th, and Mrs. Swalp's father, John VanSickle, having died there on Nov. 23, 1929. Among those who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brucke and daughter, Mrs. L. D. Coughenour and Thomas Layton, McKees Rocks; Mr. and Mrs. P. R. McAtee, Mr. and Mrs. George Dull, Mr. and Mrs. Travers Lewis and son, Tom, Connellsville; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burnworth, Ohiopyle, and George W. Lenhart, Hazelwood.
