Tayman Killed in Action in Sicily Private First Class Gilbert W. Tayman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Tayman of Callery, Butler County, Pa., was killed in action on August 3rd, during the invasion of Sicily by the American armed forces. He was serving with an infantry regiment as a switchboard operator. No details of the action in which he lost his life were given by the war department in the official communication but a letter was received from a soldier friend stating that Tayman was killed "while trying to run a telephone line to one of the companies in his regiment." Tayman was a member of a communications section and had been in the service one year and was a graduate of the Evans City High School. Prior to entering the service he was employed by the Mine Safety Appliance Company at Callery. Mourning his untimely but heroic death are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. LaVerne Salem of Mars and Miss Della Tayman at home; two brothers, Paul Tayman at home and Carl Tayman of Bethesda, Md., and a host of other relatives including many residing in Somerset County. He was a scion of two well known pioneer Somerset County families - Tayman and Keefer families. He was a grandson of the late Henry Tayman, who moved from Meyersdale to Akron, Ohio, in 1910. His maternal grandfather was the late Zachariah Keefer of Larimer Township. His mother, a daughter of Zachariah Keefer, was visiting relatives in Meyersdale and vicinity last week, bringing them the sad news of the death of her son. Meyersdale Republican, November 11, 1943
