THOMAS Fred Clarence Thomas, 71, of Cumberland, MD, died Thursday, July 12, 1990, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD. Born Oct. 3, 1918, in Frostburg, MD, he was the son of the late Clarence and Angie (Rowlands) Thomas. He was preceded in death by two wives, Helen (Cosgrove) Thomas and Eileen (Broadwater) Thomas, and by three brothers. He was a retired pipe fitter and steam fitter of Local 489 United Association of journeymen. He was a member of the First Congregational Church; Frostburg Lodge 348, Loyal Order of Moose; Frostburg Aerie 1273, Fraternal Order of Eagles; Casselman Valley Sportsmen's Club and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He also served as band leader of the Pure Country Band and was a member of the Skillet Lickers band. Surviving are his widow, Anna Mae (Beitzel) Thomas; three sons, Fred Wesley Thomas, Tustin, Calif.; Robert Thomas, Westminster, MD; and Ronald Thomas, Tampa, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. Eva "Sue" Whetstone, Mrs. Barbara Snyder and Mrs. Gail Stansberry, all of Frostburg, MD; and Mrs. Eileen Geade, Meyersdale: on, stepson Galen E. Beitzel, Grantsville, MD; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Sandra Durst, Frostburg, MD; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Files and Mrs. Donna Jean LaRue, both of LaVale, MD; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home where services were conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. by Pastor Steven J. Heatwole and Galen E. Beitzel. Interment, Frostburg Memorial Park.
