Thomas, a native of Garrett County, Md., but a resident of Elk Lick Township, near Salisbury, Pa., for many years, died at his home, May 28, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 13 days. This, in spite of the fact that during most of his long life he was not in robust health. His death was caused by arterial sclerosis, commonly called hardening of the arteries. He was a son of Jacob and Rebecca Brown Thomas. His wife preceded him in death many years ago. He is survived by two daughters - Jennie, wife of George Wilt of Elk Lick Township, and Miss Maggie Thomas, at home. Funeral services were held last Sunday at 3:30 p.m., in St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Salisbury, of which he was a member for many years. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Ira S. Monn. Burial was made in the Salisbury I.O.O.F. Cemetery, under the direction of Stanley M. Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a man of kindly impulses, and although in poor health during his long life, he was industrious, and kept on working until he was more than 80 years old. During the age of horse-drawn vehicles, he was elected road supervisor of Elk Lick Township year after year, and personally supervised the upkeep of many miles of roads, long before hard surfaced roads were ever dreamed of. He was noted for his good ideas in shaping, and draining roads, and always got along well with men under his supervision. After hard-surfaced roads were built under State specifications, Mr. Thomas had a large section of highway route No. 219 to look after and keep in good condition until his health became too feeble for such a job. He was one of the original and last survivors of the Salisbury brass band organized in 1874. Meyersdale Republican, June 3, 1944
