Thomas, 97, of Ross Twp., formerly of Meyersdale, and Daytona Beach, Fla., died Thursday, June 2, 2005 in Windsor Place. Born February 7, 1908, in Meyersdale, he was the son of the late Frank and Clara (Poling) Thomas. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, who all died at a very young age. He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Charles Thomas. Mr. Thomas is survived by his daughter, Alayne and her husband, Warren Mercer, of Ross Twp.; two grandsons: Warren J. and Joseph W. Mercer, both of Berkeley Hills and great-grandson, Andrew Ryan Mercer. Joe went to Meyersdale High School and played basketball all through his high school years. He went on to further his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he had hoped to play basketball, however, all his classes were held on Saturday, preventing him from joining the team. About the time Joe graduated from high school, his Father became ill. He told Joe he wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become a Pharmacist and in 1929, Joe graduated from Pitt, earning his degree in Pharmacy. Joe married his beautiful bride, Veronica R. Dahl on August 28, 1933. After 72 years of marriage, his beloved wife passed away in June of 2003. Not a day went by that Joe didn't miss her as they were very much in love, even after many years of marriage. After retiring in 1967, Joe and Veronica moved from Meyersdale to Daytona Beach, where they enjoyed their golden years together. In 2003, they moved to Windsor Place in Pittsburgh to be closer to their daughter, Alayne. Service and interment were private. Arrangements were by Schellhaas Funeral Home, Inc., West View. www.schellhaasfh.com.
