THOMAS WAS NATIVE OF SOMERSET COUNTY, DIED IN MOBILE. Peter D. Thomas, 98, past commander of Tod Post, Grand Army of the Republic, died several days ago in Mobile, Alabama, where he has made his home for the past number of years. Mr. Thomas was born November 30, 1848, in Somerset county, near Johnstown, the youngest of ten children of Abraham and Julia Thomas. At the age of 21 he enlisted with the 21st Pennsylvania cavalry under General Sheridan. While he never served on a battlefield, he was in many skirmishes and endured the hardships of General Sheridan's men. Shortly after the War Mr. Thomas went to Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked as a puddler In the Cartweight-McCurdy mill and later In the Brown-Boonell mill. He a Veteran of Foreign Wars, post 93, in Youngstown, of which he had been made an honorary member several years ago. On many occasions he represented the G.A.R. in state and national encampments. His wife proceeded him in death in 1927. Interment will be in Youngstown. Ohio. Daily American, January 27, 1941 [T250]
