Thomas, 97, of Confluence, died Aug. 30, 2000, at Somerset Hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1903, in Connellsville, a son of the late Robert O. and Jennie (Coughanour) Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Stickel); a daughter, Dr. Nancy Hillman, and her husband, James Donald Hillman of Pittsburgh; a son, Robert O. Jr., Washington, Pa., and grandchildren: Patrick W. and Catherine Rose Thomas. He graduated from Connellsville High School in 1923 and the University of Pittsburgh in 1931. A retired metallurgical engineer for U.S. Steel Homestead Works. He was a member of the Confluence United Methodist Church, the Youghiogheny Chapter of SAR of Connellsville, Homestead Elks, Homestead Blue Lodge, life member of Pittsburgh Consistory, Syria Shrine, Steel Valley Caravan No. 24, Uniontown Caravan No. 9, Alpha Chi Sigma and Sigma Gamma Epsilon fraternities, Society for Metals, Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, Ohiopyle and Confluence volunteer fire departments. He was given the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Ronald Thomas officiating. Interment, Indian Creek Baptist Cemetery. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Daily American, September 1, 2000 [T260]
