  VERNA S. THOMAS 
  
  Verna S. Thomas, 81, of the John F. Kennedy Apartments, died Saturday, Dec.
  17, 1988, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.  A former resident of
  Hyndman, she was born May 26, 1907 in Bedford County, daughter of the late
  Vernon Shaffer and Maude (Morgart) Shaffer Ritchey.  Her husband, Harold E.
  Thomas, died Dec. 30, 1951.  She was retired from the housekeeping
  department of the Fort Cumberland Hotel and was a member of the Hyndman
  Central Christian Church.  Survivors include one son, James V. Thomas,
  Hyndman Rd 1; three daughters, Margaret T. Shaffer, Hyndman; Carolyn R.
  Burkhart, Creston, Ohio; and Sandra J. Crump, Corriganville, Md.; one
  brother, Joseph Shaffer, Akron, Ohio; a half-sister, Elizabeth Casteel,
  Bedford Rd 2; nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.  Friends were
  received at the Havey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, where services were
  conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Ruth S. Kershner.  Interment,
  Hyndamn Cemetery.
