All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ MILES CLAYTON THOMPSON Miles Clayton Thompson, 73, of Grantsville, retired mine inspector, died suddenly Monday night, August 16, from a heart attack at the home of his son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards, with whom he had made his home for nine years. Mr. Thompson had been in failing health for several months, but was walking around every day. He was the son of the late Thomas W. and Harriett (Eisenhour) Thompson, and was born at Cherry Tree, Pa. He was one of a family of 13 children. He came to Garrett County, Md., when a young man and was employed as a mechanic by the Kendall Lumber Company, Crellin, Md., for a number of years. He then moved to Grindstone, Pa., where he worked as an inspector for the Frick Coal Company for 25 years. He retired nine years ago, and came to Grantsville. When in Crellin, he married Miss Alice Goss, who passed away, June 6, 1948, at Butler, Pa. Three daughters survive: Rhea, Mrs. Joseph Reinhart of Butler; Olivia, Mrs. Alfred Coughenor, Grindstone, and Iva, Mrs. George Edwards, Grantsville. Also surviving are four grandsons, Kenneth, Clayton, Veri and James Edwards; two granddaughters, Shirley Coughenor and Kay Reinhart; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry Thompson of Cherry Tree, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Smith of Johnstown, Pa., and Mrs. Fannie Groseman of Hillsdale, Pa. Mr. Thompson made many friends while living in Grantsville and was a faithful attendant of the Methodist Church and Sunday School. He was a member of the Grindstone Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Grantsville Methodist Church, Rev. D. J. Combs officiating. Vocal selections were offered by Mrs. Harry Hoover, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bender and Olin Yoder, who sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought", and "Rock of Ages". Pallbearers were his four grandsons and Fay Miller and Burton Glotfelty. Interment was made in the family lot in the Brownsville, Pa. Cemetery. Attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reinhart and daughter Kay, Butler; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Coughenor and daughter Shirley, Grindstone; Mr. and Mrs. Van Beck and son, McClellandtown, Pa.; Harry Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns and daughter Mary, Cherry Tree, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Soltes, Johnstown, Pa.; Mrs. Jane Bishop and Mrs. Edward Bishop, Pittsburgh.
