Tipton, 54, Rockwood, passed on Aug. 25, 2005, at Forbes Hospice in Pittsburgh. Born Sept. 9, 1950, in McKeesport, she is the daughter of Louise Ann Kartesz, McKeesport and the late Andrew Charles Kartesz. She is preceded in death by her father; sister, Cathy Kartesz; brother, Frank Kartesz; and brother-in-law John Patterson. She is survived by her mother; husband of 19 years, Kurt Tipton, Rockwood; sisters, Louise Patterson, Elizabeth; Mary Wardroper and husband, Alan, McKeesport; and Dr. Carolyn Cornish and husband, Dr. John Cornish, New Bethlehem; brothers, Andrew Kartesz and wife, Helen, Ludlow; and Dr. John Kartesz, Chapel Hill, N.C. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Coralie Kartesz; mother-in-law, Alice Tipton; brothers-in-law, Jack Tipton and wife, Kay; and Randy Tipton and wife, Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is a 1968 graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. She also studied at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. She received her master's degree at Frostburg State University and her doctorate of education at Duquesne University. She was co-author of the book "The Biota of North America" with her brother, John. She began her career in education teaching Spanish at Rockwood Area High School. She became Elementary Principle in the Shanksville-Stonycreek School District in 1993, where she most recently held the post of Superintendent of Schools. She developed a love of basketball and was the Shanksville Vikings' biggest fan. She enhanced her students' education by organizing the Rockwood High School Foreign Travel Club, which took several trips to Europe and Mexico. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Rockwood. A service will be held at noon on Monday at Rockwood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. The Rev. Patrick Walsh presiding followed by interment at Rockwood IOOF Cemetery.
