TURNER Garrett County, Maryland Joshua Hammond Turner, 47, died at Allegany Hospital, Cumberland, about 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 17, after a brief illness. He was admitted to the hospital May 14, and underwent an operation for appendicitis at 8 o'clock Friday evening. He had suffered from a heart condition for several months. News of his death came as a distinct shock to his family and many friends in this and the Avilton community where he had lived his entire life. He was born at Shade Mill, Oct. 14, 1894, a son of the late Henry and Mollie Frost Turner. He was well known and highly esteemed by all who knew him and was considered one of the most reputable farmers in this section and successfully operated a large farm for many years. For several years he operated a sawmill in the Avilton district. He also conducted a general store and for the past eighteen years served as postmaster at Avilton. Oct. 24, 1916, he married Miss Sara A. Garlitz and resided since on the farm which was her birthplace. Mr. Turner united with St. Ann's Catholic Church at Avilton at an early age and remained a faithful and devout member until his death. He was also a member, of many years standing, of Grantsville Camp, No. 41, Woodmen of the World. Mr. and Mrs. Turner were the parents of nine children, who with their mother, survive. They are Mrs. Marvin Warnick, Baltimore; Mary, Kathleen, Anna Ruth, James, Joshua, Charles William, Robert and Frank Turner, at home. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Mollie Turner, Baltimore; three sisters, Mrs. Guy S. Stanton, Grantsville, Mrs. Daniel Hummel, New Germany, and Mrs. Bayard McKenzie, Avilton; two brothers, Thomas Turner, Frostburg, and Michael Turner, Avilton, and one grandson, Marvin Willard Warnick, Baltimore. Rev. Father Hilary Liehr, pastor, conducted high mass at St. Ann's Church Wednesday morning, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. Pallbearers were Otha Fike, Jesse Merrell, Orville Stark, Julius Wilhelm and James Green, Avilton, and Charles Durst, New Germany. Among those who came to attend the funeral rites were Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Warnick, and Mrs. Mollie Turner, Baltimore; Alvin Garlitz, Burmingham, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Garlitz, Barracksville, W.Va.; Earl Garlitz, Frostburg; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Barclay, Lonaconing, and Miss Nelle Frost, Cumberland.
