Turney of Confluence, who was killed in action on Anzio Beachhead, Jan. 5, 1944, were held in the Black Funeral Home, Confluence, Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2:30. He was born May 3, 1922, the son of the late Fred M. and Edna Fike Turney. His mother died at his birth, and his father died when Elwood was three years old. He was reared by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Turney, assisted by his uncle, John I. Turney. He attended the Confluence public school. After leaving school, he was employed by the U.S. Engineers in construction work of the Yough River Dam. He joined the service of his country, Oct. 30, 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other citations. He is survived by his uncle, John I. Turney, and by his grandmother Fike. Military rites were in charge of the Turney-Riley Post, assisted by the Addison V.F.W. Post. The Rev. Henry Knoell officiated. Burial was made in the Addison Cemetery.
