Only the father survives - the mother and two children have been laid to rest in their graves. George Uphold, 32, a lumber worker, is in the Frantz Hospital at Confluence, suffering with third-degree burns. His wife, Stella Parnell Uphold, 27, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Friday, and the four-year-old daughter, Rose, followed her mother at 7:30 the same morning. The son, Andrew, aged 9, withstood the excruciating pains until Sunday evening at 10:30, when he too found relief by the grace of the grim reaper. The Uphold home, which now is only a heap of ashes, was located two miles north of Confluence. It was early last Thursday morning, when Mrs. Uphold attempted to hasten the kitchen fire with kerosene, that an explosion occurred. The two children, Andrew and Rose, were by their mother's side and with her were enveloped in flames when Mr. Uphold rushed to their rescue from an adjoining room. With his own clothing practically burned from his body the heroic father and husband helped his little family to get out of the burning inferno. Fortunately, Frank Johnson, principal of the Ohiopyle School, came by the Uphold home a short time after the explosion. Johnson removed the Upholds to the Frantz Hospital in Confluence. Funeral services for the mother and daughter were conducted Sunday afternoon, and for Andrew, on Tuesday afternoon. Arrangements were in charge of the Humbert Funeral Home of Confluence. Interment was in Johnson Chapel cemetery. George Uphold is still in a critical condition in the Frantz Hospital. Meyersdale Republican, January 22, 1942
