She was the only child of Earl and Kathryn (Smouse) Van Horn. The accident occurred while the child was visiting at the home of her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Smouse, between Bedford and Everett. While the child was swinging, the cast iron pipe to which the ropes were fastened loosened. She was thrown to the ground when the apparatus broke, and the pipe struck her on the stomach, knocking her unconscious. She was taken at once to Everett Hospital. Internal ruptures had resulted. Two operations were performed but her life could not be saved. Funeral rites were conducted at the Charles W. Smouse home, near Bedford, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. C. T. Miller, pastor of the Hyndman Evangelical Church, officiated. Interment in the Lybarger Cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, August 23, 1946
