All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ ABRAHAM BROWER BUNN VAN ORMER Death of Dr. Van Ormer of Juniata College Dr. Abraham Brower Bunn Van Ormer, 71, a native of Schellsburg, Bedford County, and teacher of philosophy and education at Juniata College since 1918, died June 26, following a paralytic stroke. He had been in failing health for some time. Dr. Van Ormer was well known locally, having frequently addressed educational gatherings in Somerset County. He was one of the early leaders of the Boy Scout movement, serving as a scoutmaster for 21 years. The Juniata Valley Boy Scout Council had awarded him the silver beaver honor. He was the author of a series of text books and teachers' manuals for Bible schools and several other books. Susquehanna University in 1928 conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, as did Gettysburg in 1936. At the time he accepted the faculty post at Juniata, Dr. Van Ormer was pastor of the Second Lutheran Church in Altoona. He is survived by his wife, a son, Edward B. Van Ormer, a teacher at State College, and a brother, Charles L. Van Ormer, Bedford. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon in the Stone Church at Juniata College.
