(Bub) Van Sickel, 73, Confluence died suddenly Oct. 7, 1978 at his home. Born Aug. 30, 1905 in Ursina, he was a son of the late Ellsworth and Cora (Anderson) VanSickel. He is survived by his wife, Verna (Kurtz) Van Sickel, sisters: Mrs. Ethel Scholl, Bethel Park and Mrs. Nell Sparks, Indian Head and brother Howard, Poolesville, Md. and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph and James. He was very active as current president of the Confluence Borough Council, having served in that capacity a number of years; he was also company president of Ellsworth A. VanSickel, Inc., dealing in Appalachian hardwoods for many years. He was well known in the lumbering business and a longstanding member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in France and Germany until the end of the war. He was a charter member of the Ursina American Legion Post 940 and a member of the Confluence Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 7250. He belonged to numerous civic and fraternal organizations, including Meyersdale Lodge No. 554 F and AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh and Syria Temple AAONMS; he was an alumnus of West Virginia University and a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Confluence and a past member of the church council. Friends were received at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where services were held with the Rev. McCurtis Allison officiating. Interment, Ursina Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Confluence or to a favorite charity. The Republic, October 12, 1978 [V0049]
