HENRY H. VAN SICKEL

  Henry Harrison Van Sickel was born May 20, 1864, near Friendsville, Md., the 
son of Isaac and Rebecca Louise (Davis) Van Sickel.  After a month's confinement 
to his bed at his home in Casselman, Pa., he passed away May 24, 1946, at the 
age of 82 years and 4 days.
  Funeral services were conducted at his home by Revs. F. Mulhollen and Gaynel 
Ardel, Sunday afternoon, May 26, followed by interment in Rockwood I.O.O.F. 
Cemetery.
  When he was seven years old his parents moved to Ursina, where he attended the 
local school during several short winter terms.  As a boy he worked on 
neighboring farms, and at an early age he left school and started to work full 
time in the local lumber industry.
  On Jan. 3, 1888, he was united in marriage to Sarah Phillippi.  To them were 
born four children, Clyde, Irene, Lillian and Edward.
  In 1890 Mr. Van Sickel moved with his family to Casselman where he purchased 
the homestead of the Phillippi family, which property remained in his continuous 
possession until the time of his death.
  Until the age of 62 he was active in the lumber business, having worked for 
the firms of Edward Alcott, Ellsworth Van Sickel, and J. B. Davis & Sons, and 
attained the rank of an expert lumber inspector and superintendent.  These 
connections required much travel and time away from home.  He was well known to 
men of the lumber industry and men of the railroads in Pennsylvania, Maryland, 
West Virginia and Virginia, which comprised his major territory for more than 30 
years.
  In 1927 he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he worked in the retail lumber and 
construction business.  In 1931 he joined his son, Edward, in the construction 
business in Bradford, Pa., and was a superintendent of construction of the 
Hooker-Fulton building and the Junior High School building in Bradford, the 
Senior High School building in Olean, N.Y., and the Consolidated school building 
in Union Springs, N.Y.
  In 1936 Mr. Van Sickel retired to his home in Casselman, Pa, and devoted 
himself to the cultivation of vegetables and flowers.  He was a member of the 
United Brethren Church in Casselman and a past member of the Royal Arcanum and 
the Sons of Veterans.
  He is survived by his wife, Sarah, and his sister Virginia, the wife of the 
Rev. Nolan Sanner, of Pittsburgh; his brother George, of Opelousas, La.; his 
daughter, Irene, Mrs. John W. Gregg, of Detroit, Mich.; his daughter, Lillian, 
Mrs. Robert Baker, of Dayton, Ohio,   and his son, Edward, of Corydon, near 
Bradford, Pa., and the following grandchildren: Dorothy Van Sickel, of Dayton, 
Ohio; Mary, Frank, Van and Thomas Gregg, Detroit; Celeste, Lincoln and Daniel 
Van Sickel, Corydon, Pa., and a great granddaughter, Nancy Stephenson, of 
Detroit.
