WALKER Tragic Death of Father of Drowned Son Cruel Fate Strikes Twice in One Family in Less Than Seven Weeks On May 3, last, Francis, 19-year-old son of Edison E. Walker of East Somerset was drowned in the Trent National Park dam while trying out a kayak canoe of his own making. Just six and a half weeks later the father of the unfortunate youth also met a tragic death by the overturning of a State highway truck in which he was riding. Walker was fatally injured about 6:30 Tuesday evening, June 17, while assisting to move a State highway gasoline shovel from a project at Ursina to another at Scullton. The shovel had been placed on a 12-ton trailer. A highway department truck was pulling the load and a second truck was following. While descending a slight grade on Route 53 near Kingwood, the trailer got out of control, and the steam shovel turned over. The rear truck, in the bed of which Walker was standing as a flagman to warn following traffic, was also upset and Walker was thrown on the concrete pavement, landing on his head and sustaining a double fracture of the skull. The injured man was taken to the Somerset Community Hospital where he died at 12:15 p.m. the following day, without having recovered consciousness. The doubly-bereaved wife, Margaret (Hay) Walker, and one son, Jay, are all that are left of this family. Much sympathy is felt for the widow and surviving son, whose grief can well be imagined. Mr. Walker's tragic death, and that of his son, Francis, is also mourned by three brothers and one sister - Oscar, Walter and Dalton Walker, and Mrs. Dorsey Hoffman, all of Brothersvalley Township. Edison E. Walker was born in Brothersvalley Township November 21, 1895, a son of Freeman and Minerva (Hay) Walker. His parents died in 1936. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in Berlin Trinity Reformed Church, in charge of the Rev. F. D. Witmer, pastor of Hay's church, assisted by Rev. Dr. D. S. Stephan, pastor of the Berlin church. Interment in Berlin I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of Johnson and Son, Berlin morticians. Meyersdale Republican, June 26, 1941
