Walker, 65 year old postmaster of Berlin, died Wednesday in the Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Md. He had been in ill health for a few weeks and submitted to an operation several days ago. His condition became critical early Wednesday morning and death followed at 12:45. Edward Walker was the son of Henry and Missouri Coleman Walker of Brothersvalley Township. His father preceded him in death many years ago. Mr. Walker served as postmaster in Berlin for slightly more than seven years and was permanently appointed to the position by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940. Prior to his appointment as postmaster he served as chief clerk of the Brothersvalley Coal Company at MacDonaldton for a period of fifteen years. Mr. Walker also served as railway express clerk on the Berlin branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for a number of years. He was at one time burgess of Berlin borough, a member of the Berlin borough council, a member of the board of school directors, and was always civic minded and interested in the welfare and thrift of his community. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret McQuade Walker, his aged mother, mentioned above, one daughter, Mrs. William Scurfield, who has been secretary to Attorney Budd B. Boose for a number of years and a foster son, Richard B. Johnson. Two sisters and one brother also survive: Mrs. Harry Zimmerman, Mrs. Harry H. Donner and Bert S. Walker, all of Berlin. A brother, Benjamin Walker, died in 1908. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 at the Walker home in charge of the Rev. Dr. C. P. Bastian, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, assisted by Rev. Dr. D. S. Stephen, former pastor of Trinity Reformed Church, Berlin. Burial in the Odd Fellows cemetery in charge of Johnson and Son, Berlin morticians. Meyersdale Republican, February 26, 1942
