Jacob Edward Walls, who died about six o'clock Monday evening, Feb. 24, at the Memorial Hospital, in Cumberland. He was taken to the hospital on his birthday, Feb. 12, and while hope for his recovery was abandoned several days ago, nevertheless news of his death came as a shock to his family, as well as the entire community. Mr. Walls had not been well for several years, but his condition had been rapidly growing worse since November 12. Mr. Walls was well known throughout this section for his active interest and untiring efforts in the work of the Church of the Brethren. He united with this church Oct. 14, 1906 and had served as pastor of the Maple Grove and Bethesda churches near here for the past twenty-nine years. He was of material assistance in the building up of these churches during that time. Mr. Walls also conducted services regularly at the Loch Lynn school house, commonly known as the "Durst school" for the convenience of residents of that section. For eighteen years he faithfully served on the Church of the Brethren Ministerial Board and at the time of his death held the office of president. He was a kind and loving husband and father and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. J. E. Walls was born near Salisbury, Pa., Feb. 12, 1884, and was 57 years of age at the time of his demise. He was a son of the late John and Sarah McClosky Walls. His parents moved to Maryland when he was about nine years old and he continued to make his home in this community for the remainder of his life. On June 20, 1905, he married Miss Sara Butler, also a native of this community. For many years they have resided on a small farm near Grantsville where they have reared their family of five children. They also reared three of their grandchildren, Eddie, Claude and Brenna Hoke, who made their home with them for about nine years, until they joined their mother a few months ago. In his passing Mr. Walls leaves his mother, his wife, and the following children: Elizabeth (Mrs. Harry) Donelson, Anna (Mrs. John) Lewis, Grantsville, Cleda Walls, at home, Wilbur Walls, Titusville, Pa., and Bernice (Mrs. Forest) Greathouse, Guys Mills, Pa. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. A. C. Lewis, two brothers, John Walls and Charles Walls, all of Grantsville, one half- brother, Arthur Butler, Accident; three half-sisters, Mrs. Mary Dickinson, Chester, Pa., Mrs. Lee Durst, Breckinridge, Pa., and Mrs. William Simmons, Accident, and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning, Feb. 27. The Rev. Howard Whitacre, Flintstone, officiated. Six nephews served as pallbearers. They were Ray Butler, Arthur Butler, Harold Butler, Lawrence Durst, Clark Butler and Louis Walls. Interment was in the Grantsville cemetery under the direction of William Winterberg, local mortician. Mrs. Walls' sister, Mrs. James Warnick, Akron, O., came last week to be with her. Mr. and Mrs. Angus Gillis, James Warnick, Mrs. Francis Rennicker, Ray, Carl and Earl Warnick, all of Akron, O., Wilbur Walls, Titusville, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Forest Greathouse, Guys Mills, Pa., also came to attend the services.
