Born Aug. 16, 1918, in Jenner Township, Somerset County, son of John and Emma (Smucker) Walter. Preceded in death by parents; and wife of 53 years, former Florence M. Manges, on Jan. 10, 1991. Survived by sons, Jack, married to Carol Williams, Johnstown, Paul, married to Bonnie Jester, Dayton, Ohio, and Mark, Stoughton Lake; granddaughters, Beth married to John Hoffman, and Dr. Heidi, married to Dr. Wayne Wallace; grandsons, Joel and Matthew Walter; great-grandchildren, Kevin, Jenny and Jade Wallace and Camerone and Braden Hoffman; sister, Ruth, widow of Bill Ball, Greensburg; several nieces and nephews and other relatives. Member of Jenner Grace Brethren Church and Gideons International (Somerset Camp). Co-owned and operated the former B & W Hardware, Boswell, for 28 years. Since 1967, operated Sliding Rock Golf Course, west of Jennerstown. Served in U.S. Navy during World War II and was the oldest living member of Boswell Post 461, American Legion, having been a member over 56 years. In 1956, along with his father, helped establish the former Community National Bank in Boswell, now known as First National Bank. Co-founder of Somerset County Housing Authority in 1959 and served continuously on the board of directors and as chairman until his death. Along with the late Edward Swearman helped create affordable housing in the area with Stadium Terrace, Windber, in 1962 and Kircher Place and Boswell Heights, Boswell, in 1962 and 1982 respectively. Worked with Peoples Gas Company to help establish service in Boswell beginning in 1973. Was an avid outdoorsman and golfer; a fun-loving person who enjoyed conversation and was devoted to his family. Cited his most important religious experience as the day he became a true believer in Jesus Christ. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. until noon Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Main Street, Boswell. Visitation also from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jenner Grace Brethren Church. The Rev. Shawn Ostrander officiating. Interment, Jenner Crossroads Cemetery. No viewing in church. Graveside military rite in charge of Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
