Wegman, 68, 1516-A Old Towne Manor Apartments, Cumberland, Md., retired assistant fire chief for the Cumberland Fire Department, died July 10 at Memorial Hospital. Born June 22, 1915 in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Edward Wegman and Lena C. (Post) Wegman. He was retired from the Cumberland Fire Department and was a member of the National Fire Prevention Marshals of North America. He started with the Fire Department April 23, 1910. Mr. Wegman was promoted to assistant fire chief and served in that capacity for 22 years until his retirement six years ago. He was in charge, of the Fire Protection Bureau. His father also served with the Fire Department and was fire chief in 1912. Mr. Wegman was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a graduate of LaSalle Institute. He was a member of Cumberland Council 586, Knights of Columbus, the Cumberland Outdoor Club, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and Henry Hart Post 1411, VFW. He is survived by his widow, Edith (Digman) Wegman; one son, Thomas V. Wegman, Grantsville, Md.; four daughters, Mrs. Carol Ann Horn, Cumberland, Md.; Miss Jean Wegman, at home; Mrs. Janet Lepley, Cresaptown, Md., and Mrs. Mary K. Broome, Grantsville, Md.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Friends were received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial was held July 13 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. The Republic, July 14, 1983 [W0633]
