WEIGLE Death of Aged Retired Somerset County Teacher Mrs. Abbie H. Weigle, 96, early Somerset County school teacher and for a long time an active member of the Woman's Christian Temperance union, died last Saturday in the Cambria County Hospital. A resident of Johnstown since 1901, she was the oldest member of the Moxham Lutheran Church. Mrs. Weigle was born on Jan. 12, 1850, in the pioneer farming community of Morgan's woolen blanket factory, Jenner Twp., Somerset County, a daughter of the late John and Amanda Hill. She was reared near Shanksville, where her father once operated a woolen mill. Both her parents taught school in one of Somerset County's first one-room schoolhouses. As a girl she walked many miles to attend school in Stoystown, and at the age of 17 she began as a teacher in the same schoolhouse where her parents had given her her first schooling. Ten years later, on Apr. 12, 1877, she became the bride of Jacob Weigle, of Shanksville and the couple operated a farm near Friedens until 1901 when they moved to Johnstown, where Mr. Weigle died many years ago. Surviving Mrs. Weigle is one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Havice of Reedsville, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. Ida Jane Miller of Garrett. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After funeral services by her pastor in the Moxham Lutheran Church, Tuesday, her body was taken to Friedens for interment in her native soil. Meyersdale Republican, February 21, 1946
