(AP) - Services will be Monday for Jerome Weinstein, the former longtime editor of the Centre Daily Times, who died after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. Weinstein, who died Friday, was editor of the newspaper from 1945 until his retirement in 1990. The native of Meyersdale, Somerset County, had suffered a heart attack at his home in State College Jan. 2. He became sports editor of the Times in 1937, a year before he graduated from Penn State. In 1940, he was named city editor-managing editor. The following year he joined The Associated Press and served as news editor in Philadelphia and Harrisburg. He rejoined the Times in 1945, after editing a newspaper distributed from Miami Beach, Fla., throughout the Caribbean. During his tenure, the Centre Daily Times grew from a six-page newspaper with a circulation of 1,800 to a 40-page newspaper with a circulation of more than 20,000. The staff increased in size from three to 30. He directed the editorial efforts of the newspaper for 24 years, longer than any other editor of the Times or its weekly predecessor, The State College Times. Daily American, January 15, 1990 [W0811]
