WELLER Sudden Death of Postmaster Weller Chief of U.S. Mail Service at Somerset Stricken on Way to Work Daniel W. Weller, aged about 56 years, postmaster of Somerset for the last five years, suffered a heart attack and died very suddenly at 12:45 last Thursday afternoon. Mr. Weller was returning to his work in an automobile driven by John Speicher, his son-in-law, an employee in the post office, following luncheon at the Weller home on East Main Street, and collapsed as he was about to leave the car. He was rushed immediately to the office of Dr. Paul C. Barchfield, where he expired within a few minutes. Although having suffered previous heart attacks, Mr. Weller was thought to be in fairly good health and his untimely death came as a distinct shock to the community. He had a similar attack eight or 10 months ago, but had recuperated. About a year and a half ago he suffered a nervous breakdown and was unable to work for some time. From 1916 to 1920 Mr. Weller served as Clerk of Courts of Somerset County and for the next five years was employed by the Arbuckle Coffee Company as a traveling salesman. In 1925 he was appointed postmaster of Somerset, which position he had held since that time. Mr. Weller was a member of Somerset Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was also a member of the Somerset Lions Club. He was actively affiliated with the Lutheran Church of Somerset, at one time being director of the choir and at another time superintendent of the Sunday school. His wife, Daryle (Kifer) Weller, passed away two years ago last December. Mr. Weller is survived by four children: Marie, wife of John Speicher, of Somerset; Edna, a teacher in the Somerset schools; Edward, of Pittsburgh, and Daniel W., Jr., at home. Funeral services were conducted at the bereaved home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The occasion was marked by a large assemblage of the popular Postmaster's friends. Rev. Dr. I. Hess Wagner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church and Rev. J. F. Messenger of the Christian Church, had charge. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Members of the Lions Club served as pallbearers. Interment was in Husband cemetery. Among the floral tributes was a wreath from the Somerset County League of Postmasters of which Postmaster Weller was one of the most popular members. Mr. Weller was serving his second term as postmaster, having but recently been re-appointed by President Hoover, on recommendation by Congressman Kendall. Assistant Postmaster Cowher is acting postmaster, pending appointment of Mr. Weller's successor. Meyersdale Republican, January 15, 1931
